Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary established in the year 1984, it is located at a distance of 60 kilometers from Kannur and spread over a small area of 55 square kilometers. Aralam national park is situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats. The elevation gradually increases from 50 meters to 1145 meters. The highest peak over here that rises to a height of 1145 meters is known as Katti Betta.

The lush green slopes and the thick forest cover make it the perfect home for the numerous species of birds and animals that live here.

Flora and Fauna: In the evergreen areas the following species are found: vellapine (Vateria indica), Mesua ferrea, Mechilus macrantha, Calophyllum elatum, Cullenia rosayroona, Magnifera indica, Toona cillata, Myristica Species, Euphorbia Longana, Strobilanthes. The common trees in the semievergreen areas are Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Hopea parviflora, Largestroemia lanceolata, Xyliaxylocarpa, Mallotus, Philippinensis.

A variety of animals and birds usually found in the Western Ghats are seen here. Different kinds of deer, boar, elephant, and bison are quite common. Leopard, jungle cat and various types of squirrels are sighted.

Birds:
As per the survey conducted in the wildlife sanctuary has shown a total of 188 species of birds in the sanctuary of these 12 species are endemic to Western Ghats and 18 species are in Schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and 8 species are globally threatened birds(Bird Life International Red Data Book , Cambridge UK).Thirteen species included in the Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 also were recorded. Other Attractions: Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is enriched with several streams and rivers and reported a total of 39 fishes from the sanctuary. The species such as Pristolepis margenata, Batasio travancoria and Pontius denisonii are endemic to Kerala. Barilius canarensis and Osteochilus thomassi are new records to the rivers. Besides these, the endangered Tor khudree also abounds in the Cheenkannipuzha.

Best Time to Visit: Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is October to June.
