About Karnala Bird Sanctuary   Elephant

Karnala Bird Sanctuary , is 60 km from Mumbai, on the Mumbai-Goa Highway, NH-17. Karnala is a densely forested tiny sanctuary sprawling over 4.8 sq km of area. More than 150 resident bird species and about 37 types of avian migrants can be seen at the sanctuary. Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Raigad, Maharashtra, is an ideal destination for picnics and for trekking.

The best time to see migratory birds at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary in Maharashtra is between the months of October and April. A variety of colorful migratory birds such as the ashy minivet, red-breasted flycatcher, blackbird, black-headed cuckoo-shrike, blue-throat, the blue-headed rock thrush, etc throng the sanctuary during this period.

Flora and Fauna in Karnala Bird Sanctuary    

Teak trees rule the landscape and the forest is packed with Flame of the Forest, amaltash or laburnum, babul, bael, jamun, mango, peepul, bamboo and red silk cotton trees. In parts, the foliage is so thick that it is difficult to spot the bird life!

Major Wildlife Attractions - Karnala Bird Sanctuary  

The sanctuary is home to 147 species of resident and 37 species of migratory birds who visit the sanctuary during winters. Among the birds seen here are paradise fly catcher, magpie robin, malabar whistling trush, racket-tailed drongo, golden backed woodpecker, crested serpent eagle etc. Two rare birds i.e. Ashy Minimet and Spotted heart woodpeckers have been sighted here.

Best Time to Visit - Karnala Bird Sanctuary    

Though you can visit the Karnala Bird Sanctuary anytime of the year, the resident bird population can be especially seen in the monsoon season. During the monsoons, you can see songbirds like the paradise flycatcher, magpie robin and the malabar whistling thrush. There is also the racket-tailed drongo that can be seen.

How to Get there

Air: Nearest airport is at Mumbai.

Rail: Central Railway trains from VT Station to get down at Panvel, situated 12 km from the sanctuary.

Road: Auto rickshaws, taxis and buses are available from Panvel. State Transport buses run from Mumbai Central to Karnala.
